The key to body-mind-spirit balance lies in the harmony of our energy centers. These centers are called chakras, which are responsible for the flow of life energy, or prana.

If one or more chakras are blocked, it can manifest itself in physical, spiritual or mental problems. Now we will present in detail the 7 main chakras, their function, signs, balancing and healing.

What are the chakras?

The word “chakra” comes from the Sanskrit language and means “wheel ,“spinning disk,” or “circle .” This term not only describes their shape, but also the dynamic, swirling energy that flows through these points in the subtle energy system of the human body. Chakras are invisible, energetic centers that regulate the flow of life energy, or prana .

The concept of chakras originates from Vedic traditions and dates back thousands of years. It was already mentioned in the spiritual and healing systems of ancient India (e.g. the Upanishads , the Vedas) . and in tantric writings ) also mentioned the energy centers of the body, which determine a person's health, emotional and spiritual state.

The best-known ancient source that discusses the chakra system in detail is the “ Shat-Cakra-Nirupana” , a 16th-century Sanskrit text that describes 6 main chakras – later systems expanded this to 7, and over time, 12, 21, or even 114 chakras are spoken of in different spiritual traditions.

Infographic about the location of chakras.

Their location

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara) – at the base of the spine

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – below the navel, in the lower abdomen

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – in the stomach area, above the navel

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata) – in the center of the chest

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – at the throat

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – in the middle of the forehead, between the eyebrows

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – at the top of the head

Their operation

Chakras are a kind of "electrical transformer stations" that transmit life energy (prana) to the physical body . If a chakra is functioning in a balanced way, the given area of life (e.g. communication, relationships, self-esteem) is also undisturbed. In case of blockage, physical illnesses and psychological symptoms may occur.

They constantly absorb energy from the environment (e.g., food, touch, light, vibrations of others) and transmit it to the various organs, glands, and tissues of the body – all of this happens through the nadi system (energy channels).

The body's energy flow

The body's energy system is made up of nadis (energy channels) and chakras . Three main nadis play a key role: the Ida (left side, lunar energy), the Pingala (right side, solar energy), and the Sushumna , which runs along the spine and connects the chakras. The goal is to ensure the unhindered flow of prana through the Sushumna, which also leads to spiritual awakening.

Chakras are often depicted as rotating vortexes. These vortexes rotate clockwise in a healthy body , and energy flows in two directions: inward (intake) and outward (release) . A balanced chakra “breathes” freely and continuously, while a blocked chakra may be deficient in energy or overloaded.

The 7 main chakras in detail

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, near the perineum, and is the center of stability, security, and presence in the material world . Its color is red, which symbolizes vitality, survival, and connection to the physical body. Its element is earth, and its mantra is LAM , which helps activate and harmonize the chakra.

On a physical level, the root chakra is associated with the legs, bones, colon, and rectum. On a spiritual level, it is associated with a sense of security in life, grounding, survival instincts, and financial stability. When this chakra is blocked or underactive, fears, anxiety, financial worries, depressed mood, and low energy levels may be common. On a physical level, this may manifest as lower back pain, hemorrhoids, digestive problems, or general fatigue.

Great ways to strengthen the root chakra include grounding, such as walking barefoot on natural soil, practicing yoga poses that promote stability and grounding, such as mountain pose or warrior pose, and eating red foods (such as beets, tomatoes, strawberries). Supporting crystals include red jasper, garnet, hematite, and black tourmaline. Root visualization, in which roots grow from the lower body into the earth, can also strengthen this energy point.

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

The sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen, just below the navel, and is known as the center of emotions, creativity, and sexuality . Its color is orange and its element is water, symbolizing fluidity, changeability, and emotional flow. Its mantra is VAM, which can help you reconnect with your inner sources of joy.

This chakra is energetically connected to the genitals, bladder, and kidneys, so its function also affects the hormonal and reproductive systems. On a spiritual level, it is associated with creativity, intimacy, joy, and emotional openness.

If the sacral chakra is unbalanced, it can manifest as feelings of shame, repressed emotions, libido disorders, creative blocks, or even addictions. On a physical level, menstrual disorders, urinary tract infections, or infertility problems may appear.

You can strengthen its energy by swimming laps, free dancing, creative activities (drawing, painting, music), and spending time near water. Wearing orange clothes and the following crystals: carnelian, moonstone, orange calcite, which harmonize this energy center, can help.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

The solar plexus chakra is located above the navel, in the stomach area, and is the center of self-confidence, will, and personal power. This energy center helps determine how we relate to the world – whether we actively act or passively suffer things. Its color is yellow and its element is fire, which symbolizes transformation, inner drive, and vitality. Its mantra: RAM, which can help activate inner fire and will.

The organs associated with the solar plexus chakra include the digestive system, liver, and pancreas – accordingly, our energy levels, metabolism, and internal “digestion” (including emotional ones!) are largely dependent on its functioning . Its spiritual themes include self-esteem, decision-making, setting boundaries, and the healthy exercise of personal power.

If this chakra is blocked or overactive, it can manifest as a desire for control, outbursts of anger, self-esteem problems, or submissive behavior. Physically, disharmony can manifest itself in the form of digestive complaints, stomach ulcers, or liver problems.

To strengthen the solar plexus chakra, it is recommended to spend time in the sun, practice core-strengthening yoga poses (e.g. plank, boat pose), eat yellow foods (e.g. bananas, corn, turmeric), and consciously practice setting goals. It is also supported by the following crystals: citrine, tiger's eye, and amber, which help to strengthen self-confidence and inner strength.

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

The heart chakra is located in the center of the chest, at the level of the heart, and is the energy center of universal love, compassion, forgiveness, and connection. This chakra connects the lower three, earthly chakras with the upper, spiritual chakras - thereby serving as a bridge between body and soul. Its color is green, but it is often associated with pink, especially when it comes to self-love. Its element is air, which symbolizes openness, freedom, and flow. Its mantra is YAM.

The organs associated with the heart chakra are the heart, lungs, chest, and hands – because love is not just a feeling, but also an action. When this energy center functions harmoniously, we are able to unconditionally accept ourselves and others, live with an open heart, and develop balanced relationships.

Signs of a blocked or damaged heart chakra may include: fear of intimacy, feelings of rejection, emotional withdrawal, holding grudges, self-blame, and lack of forgiveness. On a physical level, heart and lung problems, asthma, or chest tightness may indicate an imbalance.

Chest-opening yoga poses (e.g. bridge pose, camel pose, dancer pose), forgiveness meditations, walking in nature (especially in green places), and wearing green or pink clothing are ideal for strengthening the heart chakra. Supporting crystals include rose quartz (self-love), green aventurine (calm, renewal), and emerald (deep connection and harmony).

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

The throat chakra is located in the throat area and is the center of self-expression, honesty, communication, and inner truth. This chakra allows us to express ourselves clearly and authentically – through words, sound, or even artistic creations. Its color is light blue or turquoise, and its element is ether, which is related to space and sound vibrations. Its mantra is HAM.

On a physical level, the throat chakra includes the throat, larynx, neck, jaw, and thyroid. When this energy center is balanced, we are able to communicate openly and courageously, stand up for ourselves firmly, while also being attentive to others.

Signs of imbalance can include suppressed thoughts, lying, communication difficulties, shame, or even overtalking, verbal overactivity. On a physical level, this can manifest itself in sore throats, larynx problems, thyroid disorders, voice or swallowing disorders.

Loud singing and mantra chanting are excellent for strengthening the throat chakra. (especially HAM), conscious and open communication, and deep breathing exercises (pranayama). Wearing the color blue and displaying it in our environment also has a harmonizing effect. Its supporting crystals are: aquamarine (purity and courage), blue chalcedony (soft, loving communication), and blue lace agate (calm, honesty, expression).

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

The third eye chakra is located in the middle of the forehead, between the eyebrows. This energy center is the center of inner vision, intuition, mental clarity, and wisdom. "Seeing" here does not only mean physical perception, but also the recognition of deeper layers of reality - that is, our ability to "see beyond" surface phenomena. Its color is indigo blue, and its element is light . Its mantra: OM, the most ancient universal sound vibration.

On a physical level, the Ajna chakra is connected to the functioning of the brain, eyes, forehead, and internal biological clock. This chakra helps us navigate life – it works well when we are able to think clearly, focus, and trust our intuition.

If this chakra is out of balance, signs may include excessive rationality, rejection of the inner voice, intellectual overactivity, indecisiveness, and withdrawal from spiritual experiences. Physical symptoms may include headaches, vision problems, sleep disturbances, or even excessive daydreaming and mental fatigue.

Meditation is one of the most important tools for strengthening the Ajna chakra – especially silent contemplation, visualization techniques, and the conscious practice of inner intuition. A useful practice can be visualizing indigo blue light in the center of the forehead. Its supporting crystals are: amethyst (spiritual purity, calmness), lapis lazuli (recognition of inner truth), and fluorite (mental focus and clairvoyance).

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

The crown chakra, or Sahasrara, is located at the top of the head and is the center of highest consciousness, spiritual unity, and enlightenment. This chakra connects us to cosmic energy, the universe as a whole, or the divine quality – as interpreted by our own belief system.

Its color is often violet, but in many systems it is also depicted as white or golden light, signifying purity, wholeness, and divine light. Its element is cosmic energy, and its mantra is silence, or sometimes the long OM – the basic vibration of the universe.

On a physical level, the crown chakra is connected to the pineal gland, the upper regions of the brain, and the fine-tuning of the nervous system. This chakra opens the way to higher states of consciousness, inner peace, and the experience of a deeper meaning in life.

When the crown chakra is balanced, the individual experiences a deep inner peace, a sense of unity, and a sense of direction. However, when it is blocked or underactive, it can manifest as spiritual isolation, lack of purpose in life, cynicism , or even depression. Overactivity is also undesirable: in this case, the person can become lost in the spiritual world and disconnected from earthly reality.

Strengthening the crown chakra is primarily done through meditation, silent presence, prayer, and practicing gratitude. It is important to visualize white or golden light on the top of the head, which helps to open and cleanse this energy center. Supporting crystals include rock crystal (universal energy purifier), selenite (purity, connection to higher dimensions), and diamond (light body activation, divine awareness).

How to recognize blocked chakras?

A blocked or overactive chakra causes imbalance. This can manifest itself in physical symptoms (e.g., sore throat, indigestion), emotional difficulties (anxiety, anger, apathy), or relationship problems. Mindful attention, self-examination, and observing the body's signals can help you recognize these.

How do we solve them?

1. Yoga and exercise

2. Meditation and visualization

3. Chanting mantras (e.g. LAM, VAM, RAM, etc.)

4. Crystal therapy (use of appropriate healing stones)

5. Aromatherapy (use of essential oils)

6. Conscious breathing (pranayama)

7. Sound therapy, singing bowl

Maintaining Chakra Balance

Harmonious functioning of the chakras is not a one-time practice or occasional attention – it is the result of an ongoing, conscious connection with ourselves and self-care. Balancing the flow of energy is a lifestyle based on the balance of body, mind and spirit.

A balanced diet – especially natural, clean foods rich in color – not only nourishes you physically, but also affects the vibration of your chakras. Each chakra is associated with a color, so foods of that color can also energize that energy center.

Regular exercise, especially yoga, helps release energy blocks, maintain flow, and bring us into a deeper connection with our bodies and inner world. Meditation, conscious breathing, and the practice of mantras and visualizations give us the opportunity to reconnect with ourselves every day and sense where we need attention.

Spiritual cleansing is also an essential part of energetic balance. Processing past hurts, practicing forgiveness, and strengthening conscious presence contribute to the openness of the heart chakra and the harmonization of higher-level chakras.

Summary of Chakras

Understanding the chakra system helps us see ourselves holistically: not just as a physical body, but also as an energetic being. By paying attention to these energy centers, we can more consciously experience physical signals, emotional processes, and our spiritual awakening can also gain new meaning. Balancing the chakras can be the foundation for a peaceful, healthy, and self-identical life.

Namaste 🙏
