Summary
- OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an independent, international certificate that tests whether a textile product contains substances harmful to human health.
- The more direct the skin contact, the stricter the testing. The highest requirements apply to baby clothes.
- It is not the same as organic or sustainability certification, but it is a strong health protection filter for conscious purchases.
- This is a particularly important consideration in cases of sensitive skin, a tendency to allergies or long-term skin contact.
Introduction
OEKO-TEX® is an international, independent testing and certification system that was created to provide a transparent and scientifically based answer to a fundamental question: are textiles safe for human health? The global textile industry is extremely complex. The raw materials, dyeing, finishing, sewing and packaging of a garment often take place through several countries and suppliers. This complex chain increases the risk that various chemicals – dyes, additives, heavy metals, formaldehyde or allergens – remain in the finished product.

The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is designed to reduce exactly this risk. The certification means that the product has been subjected to laboratory tests from the yarn to the finished garment and that the concentration of the substances contained in it meets strict, internationally defined limits. The focus of the system is on human ecological safety , i.e. it focuses on ensuring that the textile does not pose a health risk to the wearer.
What does it mean to be “tested for harmful substances”?
The term “tested for harmful substances” is not a marketing term, but refers to a specific laboratory testing protocol. To obtain the STANDARD 100 certification, a textile product is tested for over 1,000 different potentially hazardous substances . These include:
-
prohibited azo dyes
-
allergenic disperse dyes
-
formaldehyde
-
heavy metals (e.g. lead, cadmium, nickel)
-
pesticide residues
-
phthalates
-
volatile organic compounds

The test covers not only the raw material, but also all components: thread, zipper, button, elastic, label. This is important because an allergic reaction is often caused not by the material itself, but by a small metal accessory or paint.
The system distinguishes four product classes. The strictest, class 1 , applies to products for children under 3 years of age. The more intense the skin contact, the lower the permitted limits.
Why is this important at all?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and is in constant contact with clothing. Sweating, heat and friction increase the chance that certain chemicals will be absorbed or cause irritation. This is especially relevant if you have sensitive skin, eczema or a tendency to allergies.

The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 does not guarantee that a product is “organic” or “sustainable”, but that the finished textile is safe for human health based on current scientific knowledge . The limit values are reviewed annually and adjusted to new research findings and legislation (e.g. the European REACH regulation ).
The certificate is therefore an objective safety filter that reduces hidden chemical risks.
What is NOT included in the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification?
It is important to clarify what this label does not mean.
-
It is not the same as organic or bio certification.
-
It does not guarantee full environmental sustainability.
-
It does not focus on ethical control of production conditions.
The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 only examines the human ecological safety of the finished product . There are other OEKO-TEX standards (e.g. MADE IN GREEN, ORGANIC COTTON) that move towards sustainability or supply chain transparency, but the primary goal of STANDARD 100 is health protection.
PatentDuo's organic cotton collection: our goal is to give safety to the skin
For us, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is not just a label, but a principle. Our organic cotton collection is based on materials that are naturally breathable, feel good on the skin and, through the certificate, meet strict limits for harmful substances.
This is especially important for sensitive, allergy-prone or conscious customers. Our goal is not just to look good or feel comfortable, but to ensure that our organic cotton sportswear truly supports the natural function of the skin – without compromise.
